We were so fortunate to have Christine Shepherd as our Guest Speaker for the evening. Chris, who served as President of Michigan AEYC from 2000 - 2002, shared an incredible variety of ways to incorporate literacy in the early childhood classroom. Chris gave suggestions to create a print-rich environment. Environmental print, the "Writers Notebook." mask-making to act out stories, shared reading, and manipulating alphabet materials were just a few of the methods discussed to enhance literacy skills in a developmentally appropriate way. It was an awesome presentation!
Christine Shepherd has been an educator for over twenty years, primarily in kindergarten and first grade. She also served as East China School District's early childhood consultant. A mother of three school-age daughters, which she describes as her "most important role," currently serves on Michigan AEYC's Governing Board and is an independent consultant working with schools and AEYC groups throughout Michigan. You may contact her at christineshepherd@comcast.net.
Chris requested that the monetary honorarium for her presentation be donated to the to the MiAEYC Student Leadership Fund.
